25 Affirmations for self-love and empowerment

“You yourself, as much as anybody in the universe, deserve your love and affection”

Buddha

OK, it’s just a quote, but it’s a quote I take as fact. Using terms such as ‘self-love‘ can (especially for us stiff-upper-lip British folk) feel incredibly awkward. It can conjure up images of vanity and selfishness. This couldn’t be further from the truth. Learning to love yourself can make you a better person. It can build your resilience, make you more compassionate and allow you to feel secure within yourself.

As Rupi Kaur said, “How you love yourself is how you teach others to love you“. Practising self-love is the perfect preparation for building healthier relationships with others. You’ll change the way you treat yourself for the better, and you’ll stop looking to other people for self-validation. Ultimately you’ll feel happier.

There are multiple ways to build your capacity for self-love. I’ve shared them within my post: How to Truly Love Yourself (in a Non-Self-Centred Way). But today, we’re going to focus on a recognised method for rewiring your thought patterns to foster self-love… Affirmations.

If you’re new to affirmations, you can learn all about them – and their benefits – in: How Can Affirmations Help You (And How to Make Sure They Do). But if you already know what you’re doing and want to get right to some self-love boosting affirmations, read on (and be empowered) below, my friend!

How to use these affirmations for self-love

It’s best when affirmations resonate with you, so pick out the ones that touch you the most. You can use my affirmation template here to record your favourites. Try to repeat the affirmations you choose 3-5 times daily; it’s the repetition that helps with the rewiring.

Yes, you can use all 25, but I would suggest picking up to 6 at any one time. Switch for others when you feel the affirmation is second nature to you. You can also amend them to make them even more personal to you. Just remember to allow the statement to remain positive, focusing on what you want rather than what you don’t.

Finally, persevere. You’re using these statements because you don’t quite believe them yet – they’re a reflection of how you would like to feel about yourself. Accept it may feel uncomfortable at first, but it will become second nature with time.
