Fatigue has been an unwelcome companion of mine this past year. It shows up at the most inconvenient of times and makes even the smallest of tasks feel like the biggest of asks!
When fatigue sets in it can be challenging to cope. Rarely do we have lifestyles where we can rest as much as we’d like – stuff needs to get done, bills need to get paid, and that’s before we think about the personal goals we’d like to achieve.
To protect my mental & physical health, I’ve had to look for solutions and thankfully, I’ve found three that help. They’re why I’m sitting here writing this (in-between entertaining the kids on their summer holidays) and not curled up on the sofa in a sleepy – not to mention, pretty grumpy – ball.
My fatigue-fighting hacks are simple, inexpensive, and can make a positive difference in boosting energy and increasing focus when done with consistency. Read on and get ready to power up…
3 Effective Fatigue-Fighting Hacks:
#01 Exercise
Granted, exercising when you have no energy seems counterintuitive but trust me, it works. A 2008 study determined that people with fatigue and low energy could increase their energy levels by 20% and decrease fatigue by 65% by participating in low-intensity exercise.
How so? The more active you are, the more mitochondria you produce. Mitochondria, known as the powerhouse of your cells, create energy-rich molecules which raise your energy levels. The more you move, the more you produce, the more energy you have.
We should aim to exercise for 20 minutes daily. Why not try walking, pilates, yoga or searching ‘low-intensity workouts’ on YouTube?
As well as energy, exercise can help you mentally too. Exercising generates endorphins, also known as the feel-good brain chemicals. Going for a jog helps me feel happier, not to mention what excellent thinking time it is – I can’t tell you how often a quick jog has helped me overcome writer block!
Good to know: Keep hydrated. Exercise can lead to dehydration, something which in itself can deplete energy levels, so be sure to keep your water bottle topped up throughout the day.
#02 Energy Supplements
Recently I started taking the newly launched Pro Plus Ultra. I remembered how taking Pro Plus got me through many a university exam and was eager to try their next-generation offering.
Pro Plus Ultra is the UK’s 1st energy supplement to contain a unique blend of slow-release caffeine, vitamins and adaptogens (more on these in a moment). Taking one tablet a day can help to boost energy, improve focus and enhance mental performance.
For me, I was just happy Pro Plus Ultra gave me the energy I needed to unload the dishwasher and make a bed. But in all seriousness, after a week of consistently taking them, I found less need to rest and more concentrated ability to crack on with my to-do list. I’ve been less easily distracted, allowing me to give my all with the energy I have.
What is an adaptogen? Adaptogens are herbal medicines that help your body cope better with stress. Lower stress levels mean better memory, less fatigue, greater endurance and sharper focus.
I’ve been sent energy supplements to try before, but Pro Plus Ultra is the first I’ve seen a difference with. I also like how convenient they are; just one-a-day, no set time, an empty or full stomach is fine, whenever suits you best.

Remember to seek medical advice before trying new supplements.
#03 Essential Oils
Over the past few years, I’ve become quite obsessed with essential oils. It’s crazy how simply smelling something can improve your sense of well-being, but it does! Inhaling oils stimulates the olfactory system (your sense of smell) and, in turn, positively affects your limbic system – the bit of the brain linked to your emotions, blood pressure, memory, stress levels and hormonal balance.
I use essential oils daily. From room mists to diffusers to pulse point rollers (did I mention candles?), they always help me. At the moment, I’m predominantly using oils to increase energy and focus. Each work morning, I spritz my home office with an invigorating blend of Peppermint, Lime & Rosemary.
Want to try essential oils? Here are the oils that have some clinical research to support claims of their energy increasing abilities…
- Peppermint
- Sweet Orange
- Spearmint
- Rosemary
- Lemon
(In particular, mixing spearmint and rosemary could help focus and memory)
Good to know: Use 100% pure essential oils from reputable sources. And be sure to mix with a carrier oil before applying directly to your skin. I’ve got a complete guide to using essential oils here.
Ready to take on the world again…
I’ve found great merit in exercising, using essential oils and taking an energy supplement, such as Pro Plus Ultra. Using these tools consistently can help raise your energy levels, decrease fatigue, focus your mind and allow you to perform at your best – what more can you ask for?
