As someone prone to anxiety, I understand what it’s like to feel overwhelmed. It’s not only a mental state (which is more than enough in itself), you can feel it physically too: tightness in your chest, fatigue, your breath quickening, panic attacks. Feeling overwhelmed is horrible, but you can overcome it.
When overwhelm sets in, breathing techniques and affirmations are the first tools I reach for. And today, I want to arm you with ten powerful affirmations I personally use to help me feel more grounded and in control again.
How affirmations can help you when you’re feeling overwhelmed
Affirmations are short, positive, affirming statements to focus your mind and train your neural pathways. Repeating affirmations to yourself regularly, especially in times of need, will help disrupt negative thought patterns and re-write your mental script more helpfully and positively.

It’s not easy to think clearly when feeling overwhelmed, so I’d recommend writing them down or printing out the download included in this post.
Take a few deep breaths and then say the affirmations to yourself. It’s more powerful to say them aloud, not least because it focuses your attention more; however, just reading the words can be helpful too. Repeat them a few times each, and if one particularly resonates, keep going with it.
Try to spend a quiet minute afterwards, concentrating on your breathing and bringing yourself into the moment. Keep a pen and paper handy to jot down any ideas or solutions that may come to mind.
Top tip: Be proactive and say these affirmations daily, putting you in a positive headspace and grounding you before overwhelm has even a chance to set in.
