There aren’t many things in life where one size fits all. Just because something works for one doesn’t mean it will work for another. That’s why we benefit from choices. I’m a big advocate of making healthy choices, not just in what we do to help ourselves physically, but also mentally. And what a healthy choice for me will be might not be the same for you.
One thing I’m sure we can agree on is that self-care is essential; however, what those self-care practices should be depends on you. That’s why I believe in promoting sustainable self-care tips — small, intentional practices you can sustain over time, no matter how busy or tired you are – because, most importantly, they align with you.
Why So Many Self-Care Tips Fail
One reason people abandon self-care routines is that they weren’t built for you — they were built for someone with more time, more energy, or fewer demands. The most helpful habits are those that are realistic, repeatable, and grounding — not grand or overwhelming.
The trick is to select your self-care around your energy levels, not your calendar. As productivity thought-leaders argue, energy is the true currency of sustainable performance — you won’t gain much when you’re depleted.
When your self-care responds to how you feel, it becomes sustainable, compassionate, and deeply supportive.
How to Build a Sustainable Self-Care Ritual
Here are steps + tips to create a ritual that works for you, not against you.
1. Start by tuning in
Before doing anything else, pause and ask: How much energy do I have right now?
Rate yourself on a scale from 1–5 (or even use the spoon theory if you’re familiar with it) . Use that as your guide for what you choose, rather than pushing to meet a fixed self-care quota.
2. Use the Self-Care Menu (meet yourself where you are)
This is where my new Self-Care Menu shines. Because it’s built on energy, not fixed time blocks, you can pick a menu item that fits today’s level.
- If your energy is low, choose gentle options (e.g. deep breathing, sipping tea, resting)
- If your energy is moderate, choose something slightly more active (a 5-minute tidy, a quick journalling prompt)
- If your energy is higher, pick something more involved (a longer walk, a more active craft, a meet-up with a friend)
The menu includes 6 affirmation cards; you can pair whatever you choose with a card that supports that action emotionally. For example:
“I give myself permission to do what is right for me” — choose a menu item that aligns with that affirmation.
Because you’re choosing from a menu rather than a mandatory list, it feels more kind, less pressure.
3. Anchor it with a trigger
Choose a consistent cue in your routine (e.g. after breakfast, during the 4 pm lull, before bed) to glance at your Self-Care Menu and do one small thing. The predictability helps habituate it.
4. Be flexible, not rigid
If you told yourself, “I must journal for 20 minutes,” that might work sometimes but fail on busy or low-energy days. But if your ritual allows for a 2-minute pause or a 10-minute reset instead, you’re more likely to keep doing it long-term.
5. Reflect weekly
Once a week, glance at what you chose from the menu. Ask:
- What felt nourishing?
- What drained me, even though it was “self-care”?
- What might I swap out or add next week?
This reflection ensures your ritual evolves with you, not against you.
Other Sustainable Self-Care Practices
Here are extra gentle self-care ideas that complement your core ritual (many are backed by well-being guides):
- Mindful hydration & nourishment: Sip water slowly, eat with attention, avoid overeating.
- Movement in micro-bursts: Stretch, walk, or do one yoga pose. Even short movement helps relieve tension.
- Digital detox pauses: Silence notifications or step away from screens for a few minutes.
- Boundary setting: Say no to one request this week that drains you — your peace matters.
- Gratitude & noticing: Jot down 1–2 small things you noticed or appreciated each day (even a cup of sunshine).
These don’t replace your core ritual — they gently support it.
Getting the Most from Your Self-Care Menu
- Print it where you see it: On your desk, fridge, or bedside.
- Pair actions with affirmation cards: Draw a card, read it, then pick an item that aligns.
- Cross out or highlight items you return to — this teaches you what serves you most.
- Don’t compare: Just because someone else’s self-care ritual is big or flashy doesn’t mean yours is invalid.
- Adapt over time: Some menu items may feel stale — swap or refresh them to keep your ritual alive.
