Aww, sleep, the chance to rest and recharge, to switch off and to dream. No wonder it’s one of my favourite activities, even if it is mandatory!
Unfortunately, sometimes sleep can elude us, especially if we’re carrying the weight of the day to bed with us. When sleep escapes us or our minds are too hectic, affirmations can help.
Although I’m better known for my kick-start the day, lift you up, morning affirmations – I’m also well aware of how helpful affirmations can be with winding you down and guiding you on your way to dreamland (the actual land of dreams, that is, not the bed retailer)
Repeating bedtime affirmations can help you calm your mind, challenge self-doubt and even enhance your confidence. In fact, reciting them immediately before sleep is a particularly potent time for reconfiguring your subconscious mind1.
And we all know a good night’s sleep is, well, good for you. Not only is it great for your health and well-being, but it will positively impact the next day too.
Top Tips for Using Bedtime Affirmations:
- I have given you 25 bedtime affirmations to choose from below – allow me to stress the ‘to choose from’ part. It’s too much to recite all 25. Pick only the ones that resonate with you the most, and feel free to amend them to fit you even better. I’d suggest saying around 5 each night, but adjust the amount to what feels suitable for you.
- Repeat each of the affirmations you select a few times. I’d recommend saying them on rotation rather than repeating the same statement over and over, e.g. rather than I choose calm, I choose calm, I choose calm, I choose peace, I choose peace, I choose peace; do it this way: I choose calm, I choose peace, I choose calm, I choose peace etc.
- Visualise what each of the statements means to you. Really internalise the message.
- Make sure your bedtime environment is a place of rest and relaxation. You can discover my tips for this here.
- Add soothing background music if you’d like (instrumental only)
- Give the process time; rewiring established thought patterns isn’t instant.
- End with gratitude. A study by the University of Manchester2 concluded that gratitude led to more positive thoughts at bedtime, which related to falling asleep faster and having a more restful sleep. Try adding ‘I am Thankful for…’ ‘I am Grateful for…’ to the end of your chosen bedtime affirmations.
