As I mention within my article – 5 Easy ways to add volume to fine hair – a crucial step in gaining volume is starting with a good shampoo and conditioner.  I’ve tried a lot of volumising shampoos and conditioners over the years and these are my recommended best shampoos and conditioners for fine hair.

Let me introduce you to some of the titans of the volumising shampoo and conditioning world:

Percy & Reed Wonder Wash and Care

The latest from Percy & Reed’s award-winning ‘Wonder’ collections range.  I recently discovered these hard-working yet gentle gems and I’m a massive fan!

Created without any SLS or SLES (See below) the shampoo cleanses and nourishes helping to remove any product build-up.  This is important as the residue from styling products such as hairsprays are key contributors (as well as SLS) to itchy/irritated/flaky scalps. Wonder Wash is perfect for keeping your scalp clean and in optimum condition to encourage hair growth!

What is SLS & SLES?

Sodium Lauryl Sulphate (SLS) & Sodium Lauryl Ether Sulphate (SLES) are chemical agents used for cleaning and making the froth you see when you shampoo.  These ingredients have been known to irritate sensitive or eczema prone skin.  Over time and repeated use scalps can become dry and irritated.

Despite the lack of SLS the shampoo creates a good lather.

After shampooing my hair feels nicely hydrated and not in a desperate state to get a conditioner onto it.  With this in mind only a small amount of Wonder Care is needed.

Wonder Care signs, seals and delivers the job started by Wonder Wash. The conditioner contains soothing Aloe Vera, which further helps to keep sensitive scalps happy.  My hair feels like it’s had a good dose of radiance injected into it and frizz is eliminated!

The lightness of both the Wonder Wash and Wonder Care (and the eradication of any product build-up)  means your hair won’t get weighed down creating a fuller appearance  – perfect for fine hair!

And if all that wasn’t enough for you, the intelligent formula (with wheat protein) helps to weather proof your hair.  Protecting against cold, wind, humidity and damaging UV rays.

This wonderful duo help to nourish, re-condition and repair your hair whilst leaving it smelling divine! Coloured hair friendly and suitable for the majority of hair types (not just fine!)

Living Proof full shampoo and full conditioner

Living Proof was conceived by the bringing together of stylists and scientists to create products that actually do what they say they will.  From my first use of this shampoo and conditioner, I noticed a difference.  And I’m not alone, in a study of over 670 women, 3 out of every 4 agreed they saw an instant improvement too (source: livingproof.co.uk).

The Full Shampoo and conditioner are designed to transform fine hair to look and behave like naturally full, thick hair.

The shampoo feels very gentle on my scalp, most likely due to being sulphate and silicone-free.    It creates a really good lather every time too.

The conditioner is lightweight and makes my hair look soft and healthy.  It’s also silicone-free.

Fragrance wise, they are both very light and non-overpowering – usable by both women and men.

If you colour your hair, they tick the colour-safe box too.

This is a shampoo and conditioning duo that miraculously create fuller, bouncier, healthier looking hair – an absolute win.

Philip Kinglsley Body Building Shampoo and Conditioner:

I have used many Philip Kingsley products before and have always been happy.  They do what they claim and produce good results.

Philip Kinglsey – a trichologist – is a leading expert on hair and scalp care.  He’s the man who coined the phrase ‘bad hair day’.  His products not only address the appearance of hair, but also it’s health and integrity.

The Body Building shampoo and conditioner provide gentle cleansing and make my hair more manageable and lifted.

I do rinse and repeat with the shampoo to get a good lather, but my scalp does feel very clean afterwards.

After using the conditioner, I find that my long hair is much easier to detangle, so I don’t have to pull too hard on the hairbrush.  You don’t need to use a lot of the conditioner, so it lasts for ages!

Philip Kinglsey products are particularly good if you’re concerned about the health of your hair (not just the volume).
