Recommended Facial Cleansers (For all skin types)

Recommended: Facial Cleansers (For all skin types)

Beautiful skin requires many things but a key component is keeping it clean.  Following a day of being concealed in makeup and/or exposed to all the elements this planet has to offer, it’s important to ensure you make time to thoroughly cleanse your skin using appropriate facial cleansers.

Long gone are the days where you had to settle for drying old soap and water – now you can treat yourself to some hardworking, luxurious and nothing short of brilliant cleansing products.

First of all, it’s really important to love your cleanser – especially as we often have to use one at the time of day when we have the least want or energy to!  So I’ve selected my recommended facial cleansers based on a range of application and removal methods – a key criterion in selecting the best cleanser for you.

I have used and liked every product recommended below.  The best news is they are suitable for ALL skin types including ageing and sensitive.

Here are my recommended facial cleansers:

The ‘apply it dry & rinse it off’ cleanser: Clarins Pure Melt Cleansing Gel*

A pleasantly fragranced gel applied directly to dry skin; which through the process of massaging in, transforms into an ultra-fine oil.  Add some water to turn into a milky emulsion which traps makeup and impurities and then rinse off.  This cleanser is great for delicate skin as it cleanses without causing a feeling of tightness.  The key ingredient – Marula plant oil – has many benefits, but my favourite was how it helped to balance out my moisture levels.  Only a small amount is required per application so it lasts ages.  This gel does a really great job of shifting your makeup.

The ‘traditional’ cleanser: Burt’s Bees Orange Essence Facial Cleanser

For those who like to cleanse their faces the more traditional way with a facial wash – this is a great product for you.  A 99.9% natural plant-based cleanser which includes Orange Oil and gentle Soap Bark Extract to effortlessly produce a healthy energised glow.  Massage into wet skin and rinse with warm water in order to take your skin from clogged to thoroughly clean.  Often people find facial washing too drying on their skin, but this one leaves my skin super soft.  While you do need to be able to stand the smell of orange – you’re about to get a face full of it, it’s a small price for a big result.  It’s suitable for use morning and/or evening – I often use this in the morning when my skin could do with a pick-me-up.

The ‘freedom of choice’ cleanser: Clinique Take the Day Off Cleansing Milk*

My current cleanser.  It’s perfect for those who want a cleanser that gives them total freedom of choice as to how it’s removed. Just apply to dry skin and then cotton-pad-off or rinse-off – it’s completely up to you.  I am always slightly sceptical about how much makeup is actually removed if you just tissue it off – but I tested removing it both ways and got exactly the same result, which makes me very happy.  It gently, quickly and efficiently removes even long-wearing facial makeup and sunscreens.  My only advice if you do tissue off is to apply slightly more pumps of the milk to your skin (I use about 5) If you don’t use enough it can disappear into the skin and make it slightly more tricky to remove without rinsing. I wasn’t a fan of the Take the Day Off Balm, but I find the milk version excellent.

The ‘daily exfoliating’ cleanser: Philosophy The Microdelivery exfoliating facial wash*

Regular exfoliation is vital to achieving healthier-looking skin.  Philosophy’s The Microdelivery exfoliating facial wash is gentle enough to use every day.  It buffs away dead skin cells and impurities to reveal smoother, brighter and more even skin.  Through continued use, it can help to refine the look of pores and fine lines.  I personally don’t use this exfoliator daily, even though you can.  I substitute it in 3 times per week.  This is more than enough for it to work its magic on me.  This product is perfect for when your skin starts to feel a bit dull and clogged – very simple and light – the results are instant.  Just massage into wet skin and rinse off.

The ‘not what you would expect a cleanser to be’ cleanser: Bioderma Micelle Solutions

I’ve mentioned this modern-day beauty miracle a few times now.  If this is the first time you’re aware, let me enlighten you on the joy of Micellar water.  A very gentle non-rinse solution containing tiny micelles (microscopic oil spheres) that dissolve impurities without stripping the skin.  Coupling Micellar with a cotton pad acts like a magnet to lift the ‘bad stuff’, very simply.  If you’re the type of person who cannot bring themselves to use more than a wipe to remove your makeup – I strongly urge you to switch to this.  My absolute favourite Micellars are the Bioderma range of Micelle Solutions.  Although one solution doesn’t fit all – there is one available for every skin type (see below for the right one for you).  I still don’t advocate daily use of these but they are great for when you just want it ultra, ULTRA easy or you don’t have access to water.  Just saturate a cotton pad and sweep over your face and eyes! Yes, it even removes water-resistant makeup.  Great for sensitive skins, no beauty shelf should be without it.

Which Bioderma Micelle Solution is for you?

Dry (dehydrated) and sensitive skin types should use Bioderma Hydrabio H20

Sensitive and normal to dry skin types should use Bioderma Sensibio H20

Combination to oily skin types should use Bioderma Sebium H20

Good to know: The Bioderma Sebium is for use on the face only.  Do not use this one to remove eye makeup.  I have normal to combination skin and use Bioderma Sensibio H20

As you’ve probably realised my relationships with cleansers are rarely exclusive.  I do like to change them up quite a bit.  However, it means I know a good one when I see it.  A great cleanser does the job with minimal effort on your part and all the recommended facial cleansers mentioned here fit that requirement.

So all that’s left to say is …Happy cleansing!

  1. I have enjoyed your blog. It is very important to choose the facial products according to the skin type. It is great that you have found the suitable facial cleanser for your skin. But might be not suitable for someone else because of the skin type, environment. Previously I used facial cleanser applied with hand. Now I am using a 3D facial cleanser and that suits my skin type.

    1. Thanks for your feedback Kate! These products are recommended by the manufacturers as suitable for all skin-types. I’m really pleased to hear you’ve found something that works well for you!
