Flowers: A Beautiful Way to Tackle Loneliness & Boost Well-Being

When I reached a very low point last year, and my mental health was suffering, one predominant feeling was loneliness. I felt very disconnected from friends and family and the world in general. From experience, I knew reaching out and being honest about my feelings would be vital to getting myself back on track.

One particular friend I talked to lives a decent distance away – not the type of distance you can easily hop in a car for. I appreciated what I was telling them would be difficult to hear, especially when they couldn’t be there physically to support me as much as I knew they would want to. But I felt their love through the phone nonetheless, which meant so much to me.

Connection is so integral to our well-being.

The following day, to my surprise (and as much delight as depressed me could muster), I received a beautiful bouquet of flowers from them. At that moment, I felt hopeful. Despite the distance, these flowers were a tangible representation and prominent display that they were there for me.

Fast forward to this year, after receiving my Long Covid diagnosis, getting flowers from another friend showed me – in the most beautiful of ways – I wasn’t on this journey alone.

Raising Awareness

With 1 in 4 adults reported to feel lonely some or all of the time, I believe we can all play our part in addressing this. After all, even the simplest gestures can make a significant difference to someone.

This Mental Health Awareness week (9th – 15th May) highlights the theme of loneliness, with events throughout the week exploring the experience of being alone and sharing ways to reduce its impact on our communities.

As part of Mental Health Week, online florists BloomLocal are encouraging us to send their Rose & Iris bouquet to someone we know who may feel lonely or forgotten.

Studies show flowers are a natural moderator of moods and contribute to improving mental health. Plus, as Rose’s signify friendship and Irises symbolise hope, this bouquet is the perfect message to send.

Additionally, BloomLocal will be donating 20% of all sales of their Rose & Iris bouquet to the Mental Health Foundation, supporting their important work.
