There are so many new and enjoyable ways we can care for ourselves and our skin. I’ve recently heard a lot about Face Yoga, and how glowing skin can be achieved by practising a series of massages and facial exercises. Learning that it was non-invasive, reasonably inexpensive and suitable for just about anyone, I knew I had to find out more.
Luckily for me, I could catch up with Lisa Barrett, one of my favourite women’s lifestyle writers and now a qualified face yoga instructor, to get all the insider knowledge on Face Yoga and glowing skin…
For all of us newbies, could you explain what Face Yoga is?
LB: Face Yoga is a wonderful beauty and wellness tool that you can use at home to level up your skincare or just to make yourself feel calmer, happier. It gives you a little bit of daily joy to know that you are doing something good for yourself – and your face!
AG: I love the idea of anything that can bring us a little bit of daily joy!
Good to know: Just as the muscles in the body need toning through exercise, so do the 57 muscles in the head, face and neck. Face Yoga uses a combination of specific muscle strengthening and firming exercises along with techniques in well-being, acupressure, massage and relaxation.
What brought you to Face Yoga?
LB: I’d always come away from salon or clinic facials feeling meh about the ones that use machines etc. – even if my skin has looked great, it had no positive effect on my wellbeing. However, whenever I had a ‘hands-on’ facial with touch and facial massage – I would come away glowing inside and out. It made me realise that we often don’t think about touching our faces any other time apart from slapping on skincare. When we look in the mirror, we often pick apart the things we don’t like – wrinkles, spots, uneven patches etc. instead of giving our faces some TLC and being grateful.
During the last lockdown, I’d got into gua sha and face massage through watching various experts and was loving this new evening ritual of sitting down to watch Netflix with my oils and facial tools. I saw Danielle Collins talking about Face Yoga and, although I’d heard of facial workouts, the method Danielle taught was very much about the wellbeing aspect with relaxations, massage, lymphatic drainage, acupressure – as well as exercises to tone and firm. This made sense to me, and I loved the way it made me feel and look. So, I decided to train in this method and teach other women! It was a massive help for lockdown anxiety too!
AG: Wow, what a positive way to turn a challenging time into something very purposeful moving forward.
What sort of benefits could we expect from Face Yoga?
LB: In general, with consistent practice – even just 10 mins a day slotted into your schedule – your cheeks and jowls will look lifted and firmer, your skin tone will improve from the boosted circulation, your mind will feel calmer from the acupressure, and the massage helps all of those things – firms, softens lines and wrinkles, lifts and makes you feel happy, glowing inside out!
AG: That’s a lot of benefits without masses of products or needles!
Who would you encourage to try Face Yoga?
LB: EVERYONE! Start as early as you can – that would be my best advice. But also, it’s never too late. It isn’t something that you have to spend hours doing – unless you want to – it just fits into your day and is great for everyone.
What’s the best way to begin a Face Yoga practice?
LB: Book a lesson with me to get the fundamentals down and then see how you go. There are lots of YOUTUBE videos, but I think it helps if you train with an expert who can make sure that you are doing the techniques correctly. After a few lessons – you can go off and start on your own.
AG: That makes sense. I found that to be the case when I started practising mindfulness. Going with an instructor to start really got my practice on solid ground. After a few lessons, I could practice fully on my own, reassured I was doing it ‘right’ and getting the biggest results from it.
Speaking of results, how long is it before we’ll see results from practising Face Yoga?
LB: I think you can see results after one lesson – my clients are often surprised at how rejuvenated they look. The complexion is brighter, eyes more awake looking, and you’ll be smiling too.
AG: Thanks for your time in introducing us to Face Yoga Lisa; it certainly sounds like a holistic and effective technique to invite into our skincare routines.
