Recommended shampoos & conditioners for fine hair

As I mention within my article – 5 Quick tips for adding volume to fine, flat hair – a crucial step in gaining volume is to start with a good shampoo and conditioner.  I’ve tried a lot of volumising shampoos and conditioners over the years and these are my favourites.  Let me introduce you to some of the titans of the volumising shampoo and conditioning world:

Living Proof Full Shampoo and Full Conditioner:

Living Proof was conceived by the bringing together of stylists and scientists to create products that actually do what they say they will.  From my first use of this shampoo and conditioner, I noticed a difference.  And I’m not alone, in a study of over 670 women, 3 out of every 4 agreed that they saw an instant improvement too (source:

The Full Shampoo and conditioner are designed to transform fine hair to look and behave like naturally full, thick hair.

The shampoo feels very gentle on my scalp, most likely due to being sulphate and silicone-free.    It creates a really good lather every time too.

The conditioner is lightweight and makes my hair look soft and healthy.  It’s also silicone-free.

Fragrance wise, they are both very light and non-overpowering – usable by both women and men.

If you colour your hair, they tick the colour-safe box too.

This is a shampoo and conditioning duo that miraculously create fuller, bouncier, healthier looking hair – an absolute win.

Philip Kinglsley Body Building Shampoo and Conditioner:

I have used many Philip Kingsley products before and have always been happy.  Whilst my main shampoo and conditioner are Living Proof, I have often travelled with the Philip Kingsley Body Building shampoo and conditioner travel sizes and can happily report good results.

Philip Kinglsey, a trichologist, is a leading expert on hair and scalp care.  He’s the man who coined the phrase ‘bad hair day’.  His products not only address the appearance of hair, but also it’s health and integrity.

The Body Building shampoo and conditioner provide gentle cleansing and make my hair more manageable and lifted.

I do rinse and repeat with the shampoo to get a good lather, but my scalp does feel very clean afterwards.

After using the conditioner, I find that my long hair is much easier to detangle, so I don’t have to pull too hard on the hairbrush.  I also found that it managed to eliminate any frizz.   You don’t need to use a lot of the conditioner, so it lasts for ages!

Philip Kinglsey products are particularly good if you’re concerned about the health of your hair (not just the volume).
