‘Welcome to heaven’ is the sign that should adorn the front gates of the award-winning Mauritian getaway known as Lux Belle Mare Mauritius.
Located on the east coast of Mauritius about 45 minutes by car from the airport, the Lux* is a stylish and contemporary luxury resort that will suit honeymooners and families of all ages alike.
We were greeted by warm and friendly staff who ushered us to a very cool and comfortable seating area whilst offering us welcome drinks, fruit and hot towels, allowing us to check-in in a more relaxed manner, greatly needed after a long-haul flight!
All the rooms in the resort are suites. Impressively refurbished by British designer Kelly Hoppen, they convey a beach house feel and all have a terrace or a balcony. I personally loved the walk-in wardrobe and the separate dressing area, very handy!
The resort features one of the largest swimming pools on the island. It also has 4 restaurants and 2 bars. Oh, and then there’s the beach – simply a few footsteps from the edge of the pool and restaurants.
If it’s beginning to sound like your run of the mill resort, then let me assure this place is anything but. Why? Because this place has personality for days (or weeks, months, years – however long you can stretch out your time there really).
Here are some of the amazing things we loved about Lux Belle Mare Mauritius:
– The food! –
Everything screams quality.
We enjoyed International buffet-style dining at Mixe, chinese at Duck Laundry and some much-welcomed adult only time sampling modern Indian cuisine at Amari by Vineet.
Many a pleasurable lunchtime was spent indulging in delicious dishes at Beach Rouge, which I was so relieved to see offered way more than the usual ‘something and chips’.
When we hadn’t lost the children to the kids club, we all enjoyed treating ourselves at the El Jefe food truck attached to a vintage 1933 Rolls Royce no less – fast food dining at its finest!
However, the absolute highlight for us was the ICI Ice Cream Parlour right next to the pool. I am not ashamed to say this was frequented by us all daily, (if not twice daily) especially when a new batch of waffle cones had just been baked! Let’s just say, at the Lux* we ate well, really well.
– The Drink! –
Freshly roasted and blended on-site, award-winning baristas (Bilal, I’m talking about you!) serve great organic coffee at Cafe Lux*. I’m a straight-up black coffee drinking gal by nature, but that all changed when I was introduced to an iced coffee known as ‘Three Men In A Boat’. Order it! Your thirst will be quenched and your mind will be blown. A highlight was an impromptu tour (Bilal, you again buddy) of the area they roast and ground the beans, we were very impressed.
There was fun to be had at the Rum Shack, our host encouraged us to try many different Rums. I’m sorry I can’t remember the guy’s name, I probably enjoyed the Rum a bit too much, but if you go, please find out his name and let me know, he’s due a thank you.
If wine is more your thing, exclusive to the Lux* group are Scrucap South African wines which are definitely worth a sample. I personally recommend the sparkling Rosé, and the Pinot Noir was light and easy drinking too.
– The Activities! –
Watersports, gym classes, horse riding, bike riding, tennis; all the things you would expect to find and then so.much.more.
Every day at a set time, staff would hide large glass bottles around the resort, each containing a message (a message in a bottle, see what they did there?). This message was a prize, anything from dinner to a gift, to a spa treatment, much fun was had hunting those bottles down.
Nestled near the kids club and tennis courts, the junk studio offers you the chance to channel your creative side and take part in art classes and workshops. Next door, the photo studio provides technical and creative guidance to help you improve your photography skills as well as the hire of equipment to improve your holiday snaps.
The key to the Lux* Belle Mare Mauritius is its spontaneity. There are different activities on offer daily be it movies on the beach with popcorn at Cinema Paradiso, stargazing at night or painting on canvas by the water’s edge. It is pretty hard to get bored here.
– The kids club! –
Play is the resort’s kids club, providing fun and happy memories for all children aged 3-11. Open daily until 10 pm with no booking required in advance, you can pick up and drop off as you wish.
At the start of your stay, families are given a booklet detailing the daily activities and their start and finish times. We found this immensely helpful for planning our days and ensuring the children got the most out of what was on offer. Our children got to take part in cake baking and decorating, face painting, snorkeling, beach sports and pizza making to name merely a few. They both loved their Teddy Tennis (almost daily) coaching sessions.
The staff are warm and friendly towards the children always welcoming them by name and showing interest in what they had to say. Additionally, they can provide lunch and dinner for the children too, if you so wish.
I was very happy with Play, but most importantly the children were happy. Plus, it allowed my husband and I some precious time together to relax and enjoy ourselves as a couple, content in the knowledge our children were well looked after.
– The Spa! –
One of my first stops on arrival was the Lux* Spa reception to browse their treatment menu. Sign me up! A very luxurious spa environment, my husband and I spent time relaxing there even when we weren’t having a treatment.
I enjoyed a full body scrub, massage and facial – all very much-needed and well received, they sell some great take-home products too. I was very happy to discover they offer treatments for children. My daughter really enjoyed her Papaya body massage (chocolate massage also available). I also treated us to a mother and daughter manicure.
– The special touches! –
I’ll say it again, the thing that makes the Lux Belle Mare Mauritius so special is its personality. From brushes dotted around the resort so you can wipe off your sandy toes to keepsake memento bracelets tied around your wrists on departure, these special touches added to our experience. As was the time spent in their Tree of Wishes Garden, filling out our wishes tag to tie to a wishing tree, it was uplifting to read the other wishes other people had written too. Two traditional red British telephone boxes offered guests the opportunity to make free international calls home – the kids loved phoning their Nan to tell her all the exciting adventures they were having.
– The Service! –
The staff always went above and beyond, whatever you asked for you got, they made it happen as best they could. They had a unique ability to be polite, courteous, respectful and informal in every encounter which helped to make you feel relaxed and looked after. How great is that?
Whilst we were having such a great time in the resort – and in case you’re wondering – we did venture out to explore Mauritius. We hired the hotel’s private car and spent the day touring the south of the Island with our driver Sanjay. Our stops included the Sacred Lake and Hindu Temple, Black River Gorge and the viewpoint of Alexandra Waterfall. Sanjay was a great tour guide, providing all of the information we could possibly want, plus he was pretty spectacular with the kids too. The Lux* provided us with a picnic for lunch, they had thought of everything including the silverware, napkins and table cloth, impressive considering we had only requested the picnic very late the night before. It’s a shame they forgot the monkey repellent, but that’s another story! The car was fully stocked with soft drinks too. The afternoon was spent enjoying the La Vanille Nature Park before being driven in comfort by Sanjay back to Belle Mare.
Although we only ventured off resort for one day, I’m pleased that we still have so much left of Mauritius to see as it’s a great excuse to go back. And go back we will. If you’re looking for a luxury, stylish resort that offers that little something extra for all the family, then the Lux* Belle Mare Mauritius is a great place to go. Happy travels!
We stayed as a family of 4 sharing a Junior Suite for 7-nights on an all-inclusive basis. Everything mentioned above was included within the cost of the stay apart from spa treatments, tube ride, tennis equipment hire, hotel car, dinner at Amari by Vineet, photo equipment hire – oh and the donation we added to the staff tipping pool, which they thoroughly deserved.
